Puppy

My mum texted me last night, saying that her dog had to be put to sleep. The dog, Cassie, was a little spaniel/boxer mix, and my mum had had her for almost as long as I can remember. She just turned 17 back in September.

She got the dog as a puppy, a few months after my brother Luke was born. She was this terrified little puppy who wet herself at any sudden sound or movement, and could escape from anything. So many times would my mum text me to mention how she had to go bail the dog 'out of jail' again, because she'd gotten under or over or through the fence somehow, and had been picked up by animal control.

As of this summer when I was up to visit family, Cassie was deaf and was damn near blind (and was still managing to escape from the property). She reason she was put down wasn't related to either of those issues, though. Apparently last month, she started having bad balance issues, and would fall over. Yesterday, when my mum got up, she went to go feed the dogs (which also includes a smelly little thing that resembles the end of a mop, an English Bulldog that had been rescued from breeders, and a fat little dachshund), and found that Cassie couldn't even get up. She wasn't crying or anything, but mum called off work to take her into the vet just on principle.

Of all the dogs my mum's had, I hated that one the least. To be fair to the dog, my main issue with her was not that she was a big scary Cujo dog like the St Bernard had been, but just that I was terribly allergic to her.
