Click that, and see what I mean. Seriously, what is this trend lately? Widescreen is becoming the standard. Screens are getting smaller and smaller as portability is becoming the Thing to aim for with technology.

And nothing works on widescreen. 16:9 is GREAT for watching movies. It sucks for everything else. I JUST WANT TO UPDATE MY WEATHER CHANNEL APP. Augh! D:

I mean, it's not like the title is actually of any use.

Anyway, I feel terribly disloyal right now. This has been a month of quite a lot of change, and all in petty, stupid ways. Delicious fucked up, so I've started up a torrid love affair with Pinboard, I finally abandoned my FFN account after quite a lot of consideration, I've lost my faith in LJ and moved to DW, since LJ was the only thing keeping me using FireFox, I've switched to Chrome.

Everything's different and everything hurts.

Actually, the first three aren't so bad. Putting all my fic back up on DW is a bit of a pain in the arse, but I'll survive. But what kills me is Chrome. Sure, it's fast, but it has the same problem with memory leak and fails at being customisable. The Pinboard add-ons seriously suck, there's no persistent status bar, which means even if add-ons for them existed, I wouldn't be able to install clock and weather apps and use them how I do in FireFox, and I can't move the fucking refresh button. The refresh button kills me. I don't know why. I also hate how the address bar and the search bar are the same thing. I can't save my most recent search anymore. Also, Chrome doesn't use Browse by Name. That's the best feature FireFox has, in my opinion. There's a page I keep going back to on Wikipedia. I know what it is, so going through my bookmarks to find it would be a waste of time. I also don't feel like typing the full URL, so in FireFox, I just type 'Theobromine poisoning wiki' and BAM. Takes me right to that page. Chrome doesn't do that.

I may just stay with FireFox after all. Because Chrome is just as bad, if for its own unique set of reasons. =/

Okay, good

Thank Christ MSWord '2010 has a brain, because I appear to be able to find autosaved drafts. Which are in tact. Even though my properly saved version isn't.

Still. WTF?

It would seem as though the good people behind Paint Tool SAI had anticipated computer glitches and system reformats.

I do not have to rebuy my license for SAI. Colour me a rabbit of positive euphoria right now. :D!

Totally and completely. You win, computer. I'm sick of you. This is why I'm restoring you to your original factory settings. I do not care that I'll have to rebuy software licenses for Photo HDR and Paint Tool SAI. I don't care that I've just lost all of my Firefox tabs and bookmarks (I have the bookmarks on my laptop anyway). I don't care that I'll be spending the next god only knows how long reinstalling everything.

As long as you fucking WORK after this, it will all be worth it.

I have been completely thrown off my game. I had plans for the night. Those plans involved me parked on the sofa with a graphics tablet in my lap, and working on my drawing until several hours after the sun came up.

It's now just after 11:30 at night. I had been working on my drawing for a few hours, and was really getting into the groove of it. I may still do some of the vector work on it, just to keep me occupied, but NOW. I. AM. BORED. It's not that I have nothing to do, it's that what I want to do is not an option. The thing which I actually feel driven to accomplish tonight is now an unattainable goal. I might as well try to swallow the moon for all the good it will do me. I have the same odds of doing that as I do actually getting to the deer skull on the desk and burn marks on the floor I had planned.

I wonder what the inside of a graphics tablet looks like.

Well

Yes. Tablet ist kaput. Won't work on either computer. The little light just kind of does that thing where in the sci-fi film, the robot is dying, and his eye-lights kind of just barely flicker in his last few moments. My tablet is a distant cousin of Marvin the Paranoid Android. How have I not realised this before?

ANYWAY. Here's what I was working on when it packed up and left me.

Click to embiggen.

I can do a fair amount of inking in vector mode, which uses the mouse and keyboard. And if I'm really patient, I can use the mouse to do some of the remaining flats. As for the rest, it will be at the insanely optimistically best, a fortnight before I can consider replacing my tablet. Realistically, and unless I get really lucky and find something on eBay, I'm looking at having to save up for quite some time to afford something new.

Until then, I have a super cheap off-brand tablet in my closet that might still work. If the stabiliser doesn't work with this other tablet, I will not be finishing this piece for several months, as I need the stabiliser to ink and shade.

Fuck.

Fuck it

Going to Best Buy. Getting a mouse that doesn't randomly disconnect when it feels like it. Track pads are evil, and mine is the worst of a bad lot.

So, I got off the phone with Homeboy from Geek Squad about a half hour ago. I'm not doing the last little bits he told me to do, and which he couldn't stick around for (and really, who would ask Tech Support to hang around during a Disk Defrag anyway?).

He did about $200 worth of service for $130, because he said that my computer was so fucked up that it would have been cruel not to do the full package. So, yay!

Say what you will about Geek Squad, but every time I've gone to them, they've been nothing but awesome. And my computer works again.

$130 and seven hours later, and my computer is finally starting to behave properly.

Homeboy from Geek Squad, who has been remotely controlling my computer all day, just rang me up again to let me know that there's still a bit of work to be done, but things should finally be done in about two hours. Which means that I neither have to reinstall anything, nor do I have to repurchase any software licenses.

That was my biggest worry. My choices were between paying someone else to fiddle around and maybe fix it, or go out and purchase a new OS, do a full system wipe, and definitely fix it, but at the cost of about $300 between the OS and other software licenses.

I chose the cheaper option. And it seems to have actually worked in my favour. Thank fucking fuck.

Damnit

It's the reinstalling of everything that I don't want to do. But, fine. Whatever. Here's a list of things I'll need to find the discs and crap for.

Semagic
Firefox
Thunderbird 2.0.0.24
Trillian
SmartFTP Client
Paint Tool SAI (may need a new licence)
Nero
Easy Thumbnails
PS CS3
PvZ
Tunebite
Fireworks 8
Security Essentials
Dynamic Photo HDR (may need a new license)
Microsoft Word
Security Essentials
Audacity
Livestrem Procaster
Seesmic
Wacom tablet driver

This is going to suck.

*SIGH*

Okay, seriously. I'm about this close to just giving up and doing a proper upgrade on the computer. It means I'll have to fucking reinstall EVERYTHING, and probably get a new license for SAI (damnit), but I am so sick of this thing playing up. Seriously, I'd love to know what Ryan does on this thing to get it so fucked up.

I know this thing can be salvaged, and aside from the glaring security issues, it's still in pretty good nick. I don't want to get something new already, when I just got a new laptop last month. That would just feel like over-indulgence. D:

I've just realised that there are no lights on. Well, I've know that there are no lights on, because obviously, I've been sitting in the dark all day, but I've only just realised that it is actually quite dark indeed, and that maybe I should do something about it.

The lamps are all over on the other side of the room. I'm considering getting a small shelf or something to put near the sofa, on which to place the smaller of my lamps, but I'm not sure. That seems like an awful lot of work.

Perhaps I'll go take a bath and change into some of my fluffier pyjamas. These ones are comfortable, but not as comfortable as they could be. The ones I'm wearing right now are my more 'practical' pair; I can leave the house without obviously wearing pyjamas. My bright red tartan pair, while amazingly soft and fluffy, do tend to sort of scream 'pyjamas.'

Not that I mind. I still do the shopping while wearing those as well. But that's about all I'm willing to do. But I'm feeling kind of ick, and probably won't be doing anything today. Who knows? I might even get some writing done if I start feeling better after my bath.

And on the random side of life, I was just listening to iTunes, when it randomly shut off on me. The whole thing just shut down and went away. WTF?
oxfordtweed: (Residents - Tired)
I just spent the last four hours trawling through John Finnemore's blog. I've got a hundred other things I could be doing, and a dozen things I should be doing, and instead, I spent my day reading about library books and Welsh signs.

Does anyone have a spare life? I think I need one. Also, any spare inspiration you could send my way, since I seem to be running low.

ETA: I'm actually going to do one of those things I should have done already, and go to the shop. Also, I'm beginning to get annoyed with iTunes, only half of the time giving me my pause/play options when I hover over the icon on my taskbar. Seriously, Windows 7. Why won't you let it minimise to the system tray like EVERY OTHER VERSION OF WINDOWS? I still hate Windows 7, and don't think I will ever come round to liking it. I've only just today figured out how to GET my system tray, instead of that stupid little pop-up box that makes me miss emails because it hides my Thunderbird notif envelope in there, rather than doing the sensible thing, like putting it where I can sodding see it.

Sorry. Hate Windows 7, and am slightly annoyed that I couldn't get my netbook pre-loaded with Vista, which I actually did quite like very much.

Right. Trousers, shop, and pineapple juice and pasta sauce.

ETA 2: Never mind. I am an idiot, and apparently forgot that minimising to the system tray was not the default setting for iTunes. I guess that's what happens when you install something on your computer four years ago, and then never fiddle with it again. I still sort of hate Windows 7, though. For a myriad of other reasons.

I couldn't get my video to play. Not fair.

Also, I have just remembered a very strange dream I had last night. Or rather, I have remembered part of it. There was something to do with my brothers (well, two of them anyway. I don't think Billy was there; Leo might have been though. So let's call it two and a half). I was trying to catch a bus, but Terry was trying to move out of his flat, and needed to raise $3M for repairs before he could turn in his keys. And Luke was doing something with comics. I don't think I caught my bus.

Maybe I'll fix supper shortly. Also, I am annoyed that Semagic won't load at all, now.
